Susanna Niederer was born in Basel. After living for a while around Washington DC and Los Angeles, she took a university degree in Romance languages and art history. She also followed courses in Mexico City and Paris. Her main fields of interest were linguistics, literature, film theory and photography. Her involtment with the ellipse began after she had completed her studies in 1983. She has worked as an publisher’s editor and as an assitant director for several films on contemporary art broadcast by Télévision Suisse Romande. Since 1995, Susanna Niederer has been traveling intensively in Asia and the Far East and in 2006 spent 6 months in Japan. The artist lives and works in Zurich.
